UNESCO, Soft Power, and Sport: Parliamentary Evidence Published

Repost: Loughborough University Policy Unit LinkedIn post

Context – UK Parliament, Foreign Affairs Committee, Soft power: a strategy for UK success? Inquiry – https://committees.parliament.uk/work/8798/soft-power-a-strategy-for-uk-success/ – this inquiry will explore the extent and effectiveness of the UK’s soft power in what is an increasingly challenging global environment. The inquiry will consider the UK’s unique soft power strengths and ask how the UK might best measure and actualise the benefits it accrues from its soft power. This inquiry will also scrutinise the work of the Government’s new Soft Power Council and any subsequent strategy to strengthen UK soft power.

Published evidence by myself and Prof. Richard Giulianotti highlights the role and potential of UNESCO Chairs, in particular the Loughborough University – UNESCO Chair in Sport, Physical Activity and Education for Development –https://www.lboro.ac.uk/schools/sport-exercise-health-sciences/unesco-chair/

Submission available here: https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/137425/html/ (and in PDF)

Numerous other colleagues and partners submitted evidence too, including:

Spirit of 2012 – https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/138362/html/

UK Sport – https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/138351/html/

University of Hertfordshire – https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/138510/html/

All very interesting and this year marks a busy year for soft power, strategy and sport as we anticipate that varying government bodies across the UK will release or update varying soft power and diplomacy strategies and action plans! Sport will hopefully be in the mix and (finally) play to its full potential.
