The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Published Text

A blog post to celebrate the launch of an edited text which orbits many topics around the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The text is published in the Routledge book series Women, Sport and Physical Activity a series edited by Professor Elizabeth Pike, it showcases new perspectives on the involvement of women in sport and physical activity. Our text sits alongside seven others, this is a must read series for anyone thinking about global issues and sport-specific issues on women’s participation and leadership in sport and physical activity.

I asked Adam, the lead editor of our text, for a few words on the The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Politics, Representation, and Management:

“The uniqueness of this edited collection lies in the collaborative and cooperative approach undertaken by the authors to coordinate their writings into a cohesive and coherent collection. Over more than two years of careful planning, coordination, and idea development, we developed each chapter with a broader picture in mind, with each chapter working in relation to, and with support from, one another. Thus, this edited collection reads less like an amalgam of disparate pieces developed in isolation around loosely connected (sub)topics. Rather, this project’s development process has resulted in a book that reads more akin to a cohesive, single-authored manuscript where each chapter authors build upon, and speak to, one another in order to share the story of the 2023 FWWC.

Our collection will provide readers with a starting point and perspective on a number of these aspects related to the event. We look forward to seeing how debates evolve and evidence is gathered during the tournament and in the coming years after it has concluded. What we strongly believe is that the 2023 FWWC is a tournament worthy of close scrutiny and study as it will illuminate opportunities and challenges connected to the context, politics, representation, and management of international sporting events.”

Dr Adam Beissel, Associate Professor, Miami University

I am incredibly proud to be involved with this project, it represents views from early, mid, later career academics based across the world. With continued efforts to make discussion from this text accessible, please take a look at some of our recent event contributions, social media and blog posts:

Finally, join us! I am continuing to work with the marvellous Adam, Andy and Julie to put together a follow-up edited collection on the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Please see information here and sign up / contact me:

We are excited to share that we are currently eliciting an ‘expression of interest’ for scholars undertaking research related to the 2023 FWWC to compile a second edited collection on the event. Whereas our forthcoming book focuses on planning, management, and media representations before the2023 FWWC, this second collection would be focused on the events, issues, and controversies that emerge during (and potentially after) the event. We welcome a broad range of topics and disciplines, with the hope of analyzing the 2023 FWWC from a multitude of angles and perspectives. We are open to diverse theoretical, methodological, and analytical approaches with the aim of providing a good balance between empirical and conceptual analysis. Our proposal is for a collection of 12-16 chapters, each limited to 5000 words including references. We will formally submit a book outline in October 2023 and request the first draft of chapters by the end of February 2024. We are open to working with early career researchers who are not familiar with publishing a book chapter and/or contributing to an edited collection like this, as the editorial team is happy to offer support and guidance through every stage.

Timeline:

  • Expression of Interest due by August 31, 2023
  • Finalized title and abstract due by October 31, 2023
  • Confirmation of chapter and book outline by December 31, 2023
  • Submission of chapters by March 01, 2024
